Stop eating processed and fried foods and restore the body's natural defenses

Article taken from Natural News, I thought you would find this interesting.

There's a drugless and side effect-free way to reduce inflammation in the body, restore the body's natural defense system, lose weight, possibly increase lifespan and improve or prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease. What's more, you can get the benefits from this natural health strategy no matter what your age or whether you already have a serious disease. So who's behind these "wild" health declarations? It's not a supplement maker or natural health group. Instead, the claims come from mainstream science -- researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, to be exact.

Their findings, published in the October/November issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism conclude there's a simple, inexpensive dietary intervention that could control weight even without changing caloric intake and help make people healthier in a host of ways. The key? Stop eating processed and fried foods.

According to the Mount Sinai study, these foods, which are abundant in Western diets, are loaded with harmful toxins called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs). AGEs are produced when foods are heated, pasteurized, dried, smoked, fried or grilled. Then, once consumed and inside the body, AGEs adhere to tissues and oxidize them, causing inflammation which can result in numerous diseases. In fact, a long list of animal studies conducted by Helen Vlassara, MD, Professor and Director of the Division of Experimental Diabetes and Aging at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and her team have previously shown the dangers of AGEs. The oxidative stress from high oxidant levels and inflammation associated with long-term exposure to AGEs increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and other chronic ills.

The new clinical study, conducted in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging (NIA), built on this earlier animal research but this time looked at what people ate and how it affected their bodies. The researchers studied 325 healthy adults and 66 with chronic kidney disease. A subset of 40 healthy participants and another nine with kidney disease were randomly assigned to follow a regular Western diet full of AGEs or to follow a diet with only one-half the amount of AGEs typically found in the American style of eating. Research subjects in the "AGE-less diet" group were advised to avoid grilling, frying or baking their food. Instead, they were told to eat food that was poached, stewed or steamed. There was no change in calories or nutrient intake during the time of the study.

After four months on the low-AGEs eating plan, the scientists checked the blood of the healthy research subjects. They found that AGE levels, lipid peroxides, inflammatory markers, and biomarkers of vascular function declined by as much as 60 percent. What's more, a similar reduction was found in the kidney patients after only one month on the AGE-less diet.

In addition, the research team found a positive effect on a cellular receptor for AGEs called AGER1. That's a critical finding because the AGER1 receptor is needed for removing toxic AGEs from the body. On the other hand, the participants with kidney disease, all of whom had extremely elevated levels of AGEs, had severely suppressed AGER1 receptors. The Mount Sinai scientists speculate that's because this important defense mechanism is "exhausted" as a result of persistently elevated AGEs.

But there's good news. After even a short period of not eating AGEs loaded fried and processed foods, the number of AGER1 gene copies was restored to normal levels among patients with kidney disease. That means by simply adjusting the diet to avoid processed and fried foods, the body was rebuilding its healthy defense system.

"What is noteworthy about our findings is that reduced AGE consumption proved to be effective in all study participants, including healthy persons and persons who have a chronic condition such as kidney disease," said Dr. Vlassara, the study's lead author, in a press statement.

"This suggests that oxidants may play a more active role than genetics in overwhelming our body's defenses, which we need to fight off disease. It has been said that nature holds the power, but the environment pulls the trigger. The good news is that unlike genetics, we can control oxidant levels, which may not be an accompaniment to disease and aging, but instead due to the cumulative toxic influence of AGEs."

Preventing Cancer with the Mediterranean diet

Which diet is the best to keep post-menopausal women healthy, happy, young and cancer free? Boy, I’d be a millionaire if I could answer that question. Every expert and non-expert has an opinion on what to take, what not to eat and how and what to do. But a recent French study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology has revealed that a "Mediterranean" diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive and sunflower oils will reduce the risk of post-menopausal women developing cancer. Their findings implicated that the "Western" diet as contributing heavily to incidences of breast cancer.

According to the report, research for the study began in 1990 when 65,374 women living in France agreed to complete self-administered diet questionnaires that tracked the participants' eating habits from among 208 pre-selected foods and beverages.

After 9.7 years during a median follow-up interval, it was discovered that 2,381 women had developed post-menopausal invasive breast cancer. Based on data analysis, researchers indicated that the Mediterranean diet was a key factor in reducing the risk of breast cancer when accompanied by adequate energy intake and avoidance of excess junk food consumption.

Prior to the study, few scientific inquiries had been made into the correlation between breast cancer risk and diet. Though the link should be obvious to everyone, the study illustrates the obvious fact that diet plays a crucial role in keeping the body healthy and free of disease.

Japan offers a perfect illustration of the detrimental effects of an unhealthy diet on a population. Formerly a very healthy nation, Japan's traditional diet was rich in nutritious, unprocessed foods, many of which were derived from the sea. As Japan has slowly adopted a more Western diet over the years, its rates of cancer have begun to increase, exemplifying the link between dietary habits and health.

Any time you have a choice between processed foods versus that of whole, natural foods, please make the smart choice and avoid processed foods high in unnatural sugars and refined flours. Fortifying the body with nutrients, minerals, and vitamins from natural, balanced sources is vital to maintaining optimal health

Twitter Workout Revolution

I hardly doubt that there is an instance when you don't hear something about "Twitter". For those of you that haven't heard, Twitter is the latest in social networking. Twitter works by having you, the user posts "tweets," which are limited to 140 character messages. These tweets are followed by people through email or text messages that are delivered in real time. It's that simple!

Many ask why? Why would someone want to receive these or mine? Generally, the followers of a particular Twitter user tend to be friends or fans of that user. This allows for followers to really almost live every random, profound or just silly thought of the person posting the tweet.

So does this kind of technology have any business or other type of application? I believe it does. Twitter can be used to deliver vital news to a large audience of clients in an instant. This application would seem particularly important for business advisers who would like to deliver real time opportunities to their contacts. So, I ask myself would this type of delivery constitute what we call our workout buddy or workout networking group. Yes, Yes Yes! What a wonderful way to tweet your goals for the day or to give a positive prop to one of your friends.

Follow me on twitter and I'll be your workout guru. I'll push you, encourage you, cry with you and delight with you. You need that morning boost while drinking that cup of tea or coffee. We'll I'll be right there getting you ready for your day. Go right now to twitter.com/dedicatedwoman and join me. Let's start a twiterevolution!

If you aren't using Twitter you can try it for free at Twitter.com. If you do, look me up under “dedicatedwoman” and follow me to get the latest on everything Woman!

Cutting Calories to lose Weight

Reducing your caloric intake seems like a logical and fast way of losing weight. Many of the weight loss tips that we encounter usually relate to variations on the 4 basic diet plans on the market today. The commercial market such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers also encourage members to eat a reduced calorie diet. Now, these weight loss programs work all very well up to a point, but they can sometime have you reaching your plateau-or even putting some of the weight back on (yup).

One of the main reasons that you only lose so much weight and no more on a low calorie diet plain is because your body isn’t stupid. Your body is designed to be resilient and when it receives a lower food intake, it goes into famine mode. This involves adapting its metabolic rate and energy levels so it can cope with less.

Crash diets and low carb diets also promote an unhealthy attitude toward food. Food and calories becomes the enemy that tempts you into being naughty. It’s time to end the guilt and obsession. Visit our site for more helpful tips. Visit the Love It or Leave IT section!

Follow Your Own Road

Everyone wants the recipe to life, I know I do. A pre-list a “to do list” if you prefer, whatever it is I’d be the first in line to have a list of the “rules” to follow for a happy successful life. Everyone has their own way of finding joy and being happy within themselves. The main objective here is to listen to your heart. Your heart will lead you in the right direction. It may not whisper your exact calling but if you pay attention and open up your heart you’ll let your story write itself for you. When we close ourselves off, like many of us tend to do, especially me, we feel torn and pulled into several different directions not knowing which road to take most often bringing unnecessary stress and chaos.

Each pathway has its own twists and turns and not one of us will share the same road. Our job as a strong and dedicated woman is to keep our hearts open and follow your intuition. We may do something now, or may be brought to a certain fork in the road and its purpose may not show itself for years to come. Teach yourself not to be so closed up and open up and allow the possibility for everything.

New issues, ideas, plans will come and go so just go with it. Don’t always question why, just be open to change. Not to offend anyone, but that saying “Let Go, and Let God”, means surrendering to life, going where the energy is the strongest, where you can let go and relax. Where you let go of the wheel and let someone else drive for awhile. Usually, when we let go for awhile our heads clear, you feel lighter and we feel a sense of excitement with the thought of starting again, fresh!

If you had a strong desire and knew that today was the day to start that diet or start those daily walks, and didn’t……don’t give up. Accept the fact that it didn’t happen today, but tomorrow is a fresh new day to start. Just reading my blog is a new pebble along your path. Starting a diet or exercise plan is yet another pebble, be open to all that come your way. Embrace it, keep it if you want or pass it along as you walk down the street do it. As long as you are open to accepting the pebbles you have a choice-keep them or leave them for another walking a path.
